Market Summary - September 25, 2026

Oil Market Correction

After two sessions of strong gains, the oil market is experiencing a correction. Brent crude oil prices have declined from a local peak of $102 per barrel to just above $98 per barrel. This drop is attributed to reports of progress in negotiations between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which has contributed to easing tensions in the region.

US Treasury Yields

US Treasury yields have also retreated slightly after reaching a 19-year high. The 10-year yield is currently at 5.18%, down from a recent peak, while the 2-year yield has fallen to 4.9%. The market is anticipating three consecutive rate hikes by the Federal Reserve over the next year, which has led to a sell-off in long-term bonds.

Geopolitical Developments

Negotiations between US and Iranian officials at the UN General Assembly have reportedly included a proposal from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the blockade on Iranian ports. Meanwhile, tensions remain high in the Arabian Peninsula, with Saudi Arabia intercepting missiles aimed at its ports, prompting military support from France and the UK.

Energy Commodities

Brent crude has fallen below $99 per barrel after gaining over 7% in the previous sessions. The physical oil market indicates tightness, with significant premiums being paid for immediate delivery at the US storage hub in Cushing. Additionally, Qatar has increased its LNG tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a rise in demand.

Precious Metals

Gold prices are under pressure, trading near $4,300 per ounce, reflecting a weekly loss of approximately 2%. The decline is primarily due to elevated bond yields, which have impacted the attractiveness of gold as an investment.

Currency Movements

The USD/JPY currency pair is approaching the 158 level, influenced by comments from Japan's Minister of Finance regarding currency weakness. The US dollar remains strong, buoyed by five consecutive sessions of gains against major currencies.

Equity Market Overview

Asian market sentiment was mixed, with Japan's Nikkei 225 gaining 1.3%, while the Hang Seng index fell by 1.4% following inconclusive talks between President Trump and President Xi. Notable corporate news includes Anthropic's $11.6 billion computing power agreement with Akamai Technologies and Paramount Skydance's plans for a $52 billion debt offering to fund its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
