Natural Gas Market Analysis: Bearish Trends and Storage Insights

Author: James Hyerczyk

Date: September 11, 2026

Key Highlights

  • Natural gas futures remain bearish due to a 40 Bcf storage build and declining weather demand.
  • October natural gas trades below its 50-day average, with sellers targeting $2.753 and lower support levels.
  • Record U.S. gas production and projected storage levels of 3,969 Bcf add pressure as the market enters the shoulder season.

Market Overview

Natural gas futures experienced a decline on Friday following a failed attempt to sustain an early bounce. The EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report indicated a 40 Bcf injection, surpassing market expectations of 28 to 35 Bcf. As a result, the market is trading below the 50-day moving average, indicating a bearish trend.

Technical Analysis

The October natural gas futures are currently trading at $2.794, down 1.41%. The main trend is downward, having turned on Thursday when sellers breached the previous swing bottom at $2.832. A move above $3.026 would indicate a trend reversal.

The market is positioned weakly relative to the 50-day moving average at $2.870, suggesting further downside potential. The short-term range is identified between $2.668 and $3.026, with critical retracement levels at $2.847 to $2.805. A sustained move below $2.805 could lead to further declines towards $2.753 and lower swing bottoms.

Storage and Production Insights

The EIA reported a 40 Bcf injection for the week ending September 4, which is below the five-year average injection of 52 Bcf. This indicates a slowing process of reducing the storage surplus, especially as cooling demand approaches its seasonal decline.

U.S. dry natural gas production is projected to reach a record 111.7 Bcf per day in 2026, with expectations for further increases in 2027. This robust production level is sufficient to replenish inventories, even with high LNG export levels.

Weather and Demand Factors

The southern U.S. is experiencing high temperatures, maintaining near-term demand. However, as the market transitions into the shoulder season, cooler weather is anticipated, which will likely reduce power-sector demand. This shift is contributing to the bearish sentiment in the market.

Global Market Dynamics

Despite the bearish outlook in the U.S. market, LNG feedgas levels are near 19.7 Bcf per day, providing some support. European gas prices are rising as the region prepares for winter with low inventories, creating a competitive environment for LNG cargoes. However, disruptions in Middle Eastern LNG supplies are tightening the overseas market, which could benefit U.S. exports.

Conclusion and Outlook

The current market conditions indicate a bearish bias for natural gas prices, particularly as October futures remain below the 50-day moving average. A sustained move under $2.805 could lead to further declines, while recovering above this level may only indicate a temporary retracement rather than a trend reversal. The upcoming Cove Point LNG maintenance is expected to further impact feedgas demand at a critical time for market bulls.

What to Watch

Traders should monitor the upcoming storage reports and weather forecasts closely, as these will significantly influence market dynamics. The interplay between domestic production levels and international demand will also be crucial in determining the future direction of natural gas prices.
