USDCAD Bounces After Softer CPI Data but They Have Work to Do
Published on October 19, 2026, by Greg Michalowski
Summary
The USDCAD currency pair experienced a notable rebound following the release of Canada’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which came in softer than anticipated. Prior to the CPI announcement, USDCAD was trading lower, but the market reacted positively to the data.
Canada's CPI Report Insights
In September, Canada’s headline inflation rose to 3.1% year-over-year, up from 3.0% in August, but it fell short of the expected 3.2%. Notably, inflation excluding gasoline decreased to 2.2% from 2.4%. The report highlighted ongoing challenges in the energy sector, with gasoline prices surging by 27.8% year-over-year and fuel oil prices skyrocketing by 57.8%, particularly affecting households in Atlantic Canada. Conversely, grocery inflation eased to 1.7%, marking the lowest rate since May 2024, although prices remain significantly elevated compared to September 2020 levels.
Implications for the Bank of Canada
The mixed inflation signals present a dilemma for the Bank of Canada. While the headline inflation increased, the slower pace of inflation excluding gasoline offers some reassurance. However, the monthly increase of 0.4% is a point of concern. Typically, higher inflation would bolster Canadian yields and the Canadian dollar, exerting downward pressure on USDCAD. The softer-than-expected inflation figures complicate this narrative.
Technical Analysis of USDCAD
From a technical standpoint, sellers currently dominate the market. USDCAD reached a session low of 1.4071 before the report, dipping below the 38.2% retracement level of 1.40818 from the rally that began on August 21. Post-report, the price bounced back to 1.41119 but has since retreated to around 1.4095.
For buyers, maintaining a position above 1.40818 is crucial as it provides a reference point for risk management. A drop below this level would reinforce seller control, with the next focus on the session low of 1.4071 and the 100-day moving average at 1.40377, which has not been breached since September 16.
Resistance Levels
On the upside, buyers need to surpass the post-report high of 1.4112. A more significant resistance zone lies between 1.41297 and 1.41532, which has historically acted as a turning point. The price broke above this area on September 28, but with USDCAD now trading below it, this former support has turned into resistance.
Conclusion
In summary, while USDCAD has shown some resilience following the CPI data, the market dynamics suggest that sellers remain in control. The critical level to watch is 1.4082; maintaining above this could allow buyers to attempt a recovery, whereas falling below could lead to further declines.
