Natural Gas Market Analysis: Storage Report and Production Trends

Author: James Hyerczyk

Date: August 21, 2026

Key Highlights

  • Natural gas futures have shown recovery due to hotter weather forecasts extending into September.
  • The EIA storage report indicated a smaller build, suggesting that summer heat is beginning to slow down injections.
  • Despite the recovery, storage levels remain above the five-year average, providing sellers with a strong supply argument during rallies.

Market Overview

Natural gas futures experienced a bounce as forecasts for hotter weather into September provided a boost to the market. The latest EIA report revealed the smallest injection relative to the five-year average in several weeks, indicating that the demand side is starting to gain traction. However, production levels remain high, which continues to challenge any significant price increases.

Production and Supply Dynamics

In August, the Lower-48 dry gas output averaged between 111.4 to 111.6 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per day, surpassing the previous record set in July. Although there have been minor daily fluctuations, the overall trend indicates that production remains robust enough to keep storage levels comfortable, even amidst several weeks of hot weather.

Additionally, LNG feedgas deliveries to U.S. export terminals have been strong, averaging around 17.2 Bcf per day. This consistent demand from international markets, particularly from Europe and Asia, is pulling U.S. gas towards the coast, further complicating the domestic supply situation.

Storage Report Insights

The EIA reported a 16 Bcf injection into storage for the week ending August 14, which was below analyst expectations of 19 Bcf and significantly lower than the five-year average of 29 Bcf for the same week. This indicates that while inventories are still high, the rate of increase has begun to slow, which could signal a shift in market dynamics.

Despite the overall storage surplus, the heat in the South Central region has started to impact demand, with temperatures in Houston expected to reach around 100 degrees for several days. This could lead to increased gas burn and further influence market conditions.

Technical Analysis

As of the latest trading session, September natural gas futures were trading at $2.780, reflecting a 1.72% increase. The market is currently testing resistance levels at $2.875, with the 50-day moving average acting as a significant barrier at $2.927. On the downside, support levels are identified at $2.638 and $2.616.

The market appears to be rangebound, with traders awaiting the next major catalyst, which could be the upcoming storage report or new weather models. The recent injection data has provided some optimism, but the high production levels continue to pose a challenge for sustained price increases.

Conclusion

The natural gas market is currently navigating a complex landscape of high production and changing demand dynamics due to weather patterns. The upcoming storage reports and weather forecasts will be critical in determining the market's direction in the near term. Traders should remain vigilant as the balance between supply and demand continues to evolve.
