The Crypto Market Is Moving in the Opposite Direction to Equities

By: Alexander Kuptsikevich | Published: Aug 03, 2026

Market Overview

The crypto market is experiencing a downturn, primarily driven by Bitcoin's decline. As August begins, a historically weak month for Bitcoin, investor caution is heightened due to recent news and market trends.

Currently, the total crypto market capitalization has decreased by 1% over the past 24 hours, reverting to levels not seen since mid-July. This decline is notable as it contrasts with the rising trend in the Nasdaq 100 index, suggesting a potential new norm where cryptocurrencies and equities move in opposite directions.

Bitcoin's Performance

Bitcoin has fallen below the critical support level of $63,000, dragging the entire market down. A brief rebound attempt was unsuccessful, indicating the challenges faced by bullish investors trying to reverse the ongoing bear market that began in September of the previous year.

In July, Bitcoin saw a 7.3% increase, reaching $62,900, following its steepest monthly decline in four years during June. However, August is typically unfavorable for Bitcoin, with historical data showing that it has only ended the month positively five times in the last 15 years, averaging a decline of 13.8% over the last four years.

Recent Developments in the Crypto Space

In the second quarter, a notable strategy reported a net loss of $8.2 billion, a stark contrast to the $10 billion profit from the same period last year. This loss is attributed to unrealized 'paper' losses from Bitcoin held in reserves. The company plans to continue selling Bitcoin but will not automatically reinvest all capital raised from share sales into BTC.

Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged the Senate to expedite the voting process for the CLARITY Act, criticizing delays attributed to political maneuvering. Meanwhile, Quantum Solutions, Japan's largest public Ethereum holder, has sold 1,000 ETH for $1.9 million to fund AI development.

Tether's excess reserves have halved to $4.11 billion, while the circulation of USDT has increased by $446 million to $184.6 billion, with user numbers surpassing 650 million.

Conclusion

The current state of the crypto market, particularly Bitcoin's performance, reflects a challenging environment for investors. With August historically being a weak month for Bitcoin and the market showing signs of divergence from equities, caution is advised as the landscape continues to evolve.
