Last Week’s Recap

The US imposed new tariffs on imports from 60 economies, Brent crude oil prices surged above $100 a barrel due to Houthi attacks, and the European Central Bank (ECB) maintained its interest rates.

Key Market Developments

Tariffs and Trade

The US introduced new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on imports from various countries, citing forced labor allegations. This move replaces a temporary 10% tariff that expired. The tariffs on generic drugs could reach 100% within two years, and ongoing investigations into national security could further impact trade, especially with China.

Oil Prices and Treasury Yields

Brent crude prices rose sharply following attacks on Saudi oil tankers, while US ten-year Treasury yields increased to over 4.7%, indicating market expectations of a tighter Federal Reserve policy.

ECB's Decision

The ECB held interest rates steady, with President Lagarde hinting at the potential for a rate hike in September, as markets anticipate a 70% probability of such a move.

UK Political Changes

Andy Burnham became the new UK Prime Minister, succeeding Keir Starmer. His fiscal proposals raised concerns about the cost of living, contributing to a decline in the value of the British pound.

Market Performance

US Equities

The S&P 500 fell 0.6% for the week, marking a second consecutive decline, primarily driven by disappointing earnings from major tech companies. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 1.6%, while the Dow Jones saw a smaller decline of 0.4%.

Alphabet's shares fell 7.8% despite strong revenue growth, as investors reacted negatively to increased capital expenditure guidance. Tesla's stock plummeted 17.8% following an earnings miss and concerns over its spending and future projects.

In contrast, Super Micro Computer's stock surged 24.5% due to a record order backlog and improved margin guidance.

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Seng Index rose 1.6%, driven by gains in banking stocks and positive sentiment around potential Fed rate hikes. However, regulatory pressures on internet platforms led to declines in major Chinese tech stocks.

Japanese Yen Concerns

The yen's weakness is becoming a significant concern, exacerbated by a stronger dollar and a widening policy gap between the Fed and the Bank of Japan. Recent data showed rising inflation and trade deficits, raising fears about the yen's impact on economic growth.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming week is pivotal, with the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision being the highlight. Markets are pricing in a 34% chance of a rate hike. Additionally, key earnings reports from major companies, including four from the "Magnificent Seven," will be closely monitored.

Other significant events include inflation data releases from Australia and the euro area, as well as China's PMI data. The Bank of England is expected to maintain its current rates, while the Bank of Japan is anticipated to keep rates unchanged as well.
