Oil Market Analysis: Supply Risk and Price Movements

Key Highlights

  • WTI crude oil prices surged by 10.64% and Brent by 11.83% last week due to heightened shipping risks in the Middle East.
  • Diplomatic efforts may quickly influence oil prices, but tangible improvements in shipping safety are necessary to reduce the current supply-risk premium.

Current Market Dynamics

The oil market experienced significant volatility last week, with Brent crude oil prices rising from the mid-$80s to over $100, while WTI crude oil prices increased from $80 to above $92. This surge was primarily driven by escalating shipping risks in the Hormuz Strait and the Red Sea, where Iranian Revolutionary Guards have asserted control over maritime traffic.

Recent attacks on Saudi tankers near Bab el-Mandeb have compounded these risks, leading to a substantial rally in oil prices. As a result, September WTI futures closed at $90.47, marking an increase of $8.70, while Brent futures settled at $102.00, up $10.44.

Supply Chain Challenges

Saudi Arabia's export routes are currently under threat, with both the Hormuz Strait and the Red Sea facing disruptions. Despite having spare production capacity, Saudi Arabia is unable to capitalize on it due to these chokepoints. Consequently, refiners are seeking alternative crude sources, leading to increased prices for North Sea, West African, and Mediterranean grades.

Additionally, the ongoing military actions and diplomatic negotiations have created a precarious situation where any positive news can lead to profit-taking, while negative developments can quickly drive prices back up.

Technical Analysis

WTI crude oil futures are positioned to test a significant resistance level at $95.30, which, if breached, could indicate a bullish trend. The nearest support levels are identified between $84.53 and $81.21, with a more substantial support zone at $75.40 to $70.70.

Brent crude oil futures are also poised to challenge their last main top at $103.26. A sustained close above the psychological $100 mark could lead to further upward momentum, with potential targets at $108.34 and $115.30.

Outlook

The immediate future of the oil market hinges on tanker traffic and the resolution of shipping risks. Regular transits through Hormuz and reduced insurance costs are critical for stabilizing prices. Until there is clear evidence of improved physical flows, the market is likely to remain volatile, with the potential for further price increases in response to geopolitical tensions.
