USDCAD Falls Below 1.4000 as Stronger Canadian Spending Keeps Sellers in Control

Published on October 23, 2026, by Greg Michalowski

Summary

The USDCAD currency pair has experienced a seventh consecutive lower close, with the first resistance level for buyers set at 1.40149. Recent data from Statistics Canada indicates a notable increase in consumer spending, with retail sales rising by 1.2% in August, reaching $74.6 billion. This growth was observed across all nine subsectors, suggesting a robust underlying demand.

Core retail sales also saw a rise of 1.1%, reversing a previous decline in July. However, the increase in gasoline sales was primarily driven by higher prices, as sales volumes in this category fell by 0.5% despite a 1.7% increase in receipts.

Economic Context

While the retail sales report provides a positive outlook for the Canadian economy, other economic indicators present a mixed picture. Notably, Canada experienced a loss of 68,000 jobs in September, with the unemployment rate rising to 6.5%. This decline in employment raises concerns about the sustainability of consumer spending, especially since the August retail figures do not account for the subsequent job losses.

Inflation trends also warrant attention. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 3.1% year-over-year in September, up from 3.0%, largely due to gasoline prices. However, when excluding gasoline, inflation moderated to 2.2%. This indicates that while energy costs are influencing headline inflation, broader price pressures are easing.

Bank of Canada's Position

The Bank of Canada faces a complex situation with resilient consumer spending juxtaposed against weaker employment figures and moderating inflation. The central bank maintained its policy rate at 2.25% in September, with the next decision expected on October 28. The recent retail figures may lessen the urgency for monetary easing, but employment concerns remain significant.

Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, the recent strength in Canadian spending typically supports the Canadian dollar, contributing to downward pressure on USDCAD. The pair has recently fallen to a session low of 1.3983, breaking below the psychological support level of 1.4000.

Earlier in the Asian-Pacific session, USDCAD dipped to 1.39963 but failed to maintain that break. A subsequent bounce brought the price back towards the 50% retracement level at 1.40149, but sellers regained control, leading to new lows.

Future Price Action

The next downside target for USDCAD is identified within a swing area between 1.3948 and 1.3966. A break below 1.3966 could lead to a test of 1.3948, which coincides with the 61.8% retracement level from the August low. A sustained break below this level would signify a technical victory for sellers, potentially shifting focus towards the 200-day moving average at 1.38814.

As of now, USDCAD has closed lower for six consecutive days, with the potential for a seventh if it remains below 1.4005. Sellers currently hold the momentum, but buyers need to reclaim the 50% midpoint at 1.40149 to alleviate immediate pressure.

Conclusion

The interplay between strong retail sales and rising unemployment presents a challenging landscape for the Canadian economy. While the technical indicators suggest a bearish trend for USDCAD, the mixed economic signals create uncertainty regarding the sustainability of this movement.
