Natural Gas Market Analysis - October 21, 2026

Market Overview

Natural gas prices have experienced a significant decline, dropping 6% to approximately 2.81 USD/MMBtu. This marks the lowest price level in three weeks and is part of a broader trend of a double-digit weekly sell-off, totaling a decrease of 14.4%. Following the rollover to the December contract, prices are expected to open lower at around 3.2 USD/MMBtu, with the January contract, typically the highest priced due to peak heating season demand, currently trading near 3.6 USD/MMBtu.

Weather Impact on Demand

The primary factor influencing the decline in natural gas prices is the weather. Forecasts from the Commodity Weather Group indicate above-normal temperatures across the eastern United States through early November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also confirmed a warm signal for the southern two-thirds of the country during the last week of October, which is expected to further reduce heating demand. Additionally, the anticipated "Super El Niño" phenomenon is likely to contribute to a milder winter across the Northern Hemisphere.

Supply Dynamics

On the supply side, there has been a slight decrease in production, with output at 111.3 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in October, down from a record 113.3 bcfd in August and September. However, rising liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, which have increased to 18.1 bcfd from 17.9 bcfd in September, are not sufficient to counterbalance the significant reduction in heating demand.

Inventory Levels

The latest report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) for the week ending October 9 indicated a storage injection of 67 billion cubic feet (bcf), down from 85 bcf previously. Current inventories stand at 3,567 bcf, which is 1.3% above the five-year average but 3.9% below last year's levels. The upcoming EIA report is crucial, as the market is looking for a smaller injection and a cooler forecast to support a narrative of market tightening.

Market Positioning

According to the latest Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) report, funds hold a record net short position of -233,578 contracts, placing this positioning at just the 1.3th percentile of historical distribution. This extreme bearish sentiment creates the potential for a sharp short squeeze if unexpected cold weather occurs. However, the current bearish positioning aligns with the prevailing downward price trend.

Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, natural gas prices are approaching the 2.80 USD level, which corresponds to the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement. The price is currently trading 5.2% below the 50-day simple moving average (SMA). The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 38, nearing oversold territory, but both the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and moving averages indicate a bearish trend. Immediate support is identified at the 2.70–2.75 USD range, with potential declines to 2.65 USD and possibly 2.50 USD in a deeper sell-off scenario. Resistance levels are noted at the psychological 3.00 USD mark and 3.15 USD (SMA50).
