USD/JPY Forecast: Is Rising Japanese Inflation Supporting the Yen?

By Julian Pineda, Market Analyst

Date: October 23, 2026

Overview

The Japanese yen has shown renewed strength in the FX market, particularly against the U.S. dollar, as evidenced by the recent performance of the USD/JPY pair, which has declined nearly 1.0% over the last two trading sessions. This recovery in the yen is attributed to a combination of factors, including a decrease in U.S. Treasury yields and rising inflation in Japan.

Is the Dollar Beginning to Lose Strength?

Throughout the week, the U.S. dollar has exhibited signs of weakening, primarily due to a moderation in 10-year U.S. Treasury yields, which dipped below the 5.0% mark. This decline in yields diminishes the attractiveness of dollar-denominated investments, leading to a decrease in demand for the U.S. currency. The DXY index, which measures the dollar's strength against major currencies, has also retreated from its yearly highs, indicating a softening demand for the dollar.

Do Japan's Inflation Data Matter?

Japan's latest inflation data has shown an annual increase to 2.1%, the highest level for 2026, which is above the Bank of Japan's target of 2.0%. This rise in inflation is raising concerns about inflationary pressures in the Japanese economy and is influencing expectations regarding monetary policy. Market sentiment has shifted, with a decreasing probability that the Bank of Japan will maintain its current policy rate of 1.25% during the upcoming meeting, and an increasing likelihood of a rate hike to 1.50% by December.

USD/JPY Technical Forecast

The technical outlook for USD/JPY indicates a bearish bias. Recent price action has reestablished selling pressure, suggesting that the broader bearish trend may continue. Key technical levels to watch include:

  • 158.86: Key Resistance - aligns with the 200-period simple moving average.
  • 157.38: Near-Term Barrier - coincides with the base of the recent consolidation range.
  • 155.30: Key Support - a significant downside barrier that could reinforce the bearish trend if tested.

Indicators such as the MACD and RSI suggest weakening momentum, supporting the bearish outlook for the pair in the near term.
