Economic Calendar Summary - October 12, 2026

Market Overview

On October 12, 2026, stock exchanges are expected to experience reduced liquidity due to public holidays in Canada (Thanksgiving) and Japan (Health and Sports Day). Additionally, Columbus Day is observed in the United States, affecting federal administration, government offices, and banks.

Key Economic Events

Investors are particularly focused on the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which will feature speeches from officials of the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve. This meeting is anticipated to provide insights into future monetary policies.

Geopolitical Developments

Geopolitical tensions remain high, especially in the Middle East, following recent Houthi strikes on strategic infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. Concurrently, discussions between the European Union and China regarding trade regulations for electric and hybrid vehicles are ongoing.

Macroeconomic Highlights

South Korea

South Korea reported a significant increase in exports during the first ten days of October, surging by 102.0% year-on-year, resulting in a trade surplus of USD 3.8 billion. This data has positively impacted the South Korean won, pushing the USD/KRW exchange rate to its lowest level in over a month.

China

The People's Bank of China has set the yuan fixing at its strongest level since February 2023 and conducted a reverse repo operation worth CNY 50 billion. However, the China Passenger Car Association reported a 28.1% year-on-year decline in passenger car sales for September, indicating ongoing pressure on consumer demand.

North Korea

North Korea has launched multiple ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area, with the missiles traveling over 900 km before landing outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. An emergency meeting of South Korea's National Security Council is currently underway in response to this development.

Market Insights

Brent crude futures approached USD 105 due to renewed Houthi attacks on Riyadh's main airport but later reversed to around USD 103 as the market assessed the geopolitical risks against claims of an "energy truce" between Russia and Ukraine. Despite the tensions, crude exports from the Persian Gulf remain stable, limiting the geopolitical risk premium.

The 10-year Treasury yield is hovering near 5.24%, having reached its highest level since 2002 at 5.4% last week. Additionally, the USD/INR pair has seen a sharp decline of around 1%, marking its most significant drop in six months, following the Reserve Bank of India's announcement of a special forex window for oil companies.
