Market Summary - August 12, 2026

Market Overview

The Wall Street session concluded with a downturn, as major indices experienced declines. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones both fell by 0.3%, while the Nasdaq saw a slightly larger drop of 0.6%. Investor sentiment remains cautious ahead of the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data.

Corporate Earnings

Super Micro Computer reported impressive fourth-quarter results, with revenue reaching USD 11.12 billion, marking a 93% year-over-year increase. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) stood at USD 1.70, surpassing analysts' expectations. Notably, the company's gross margin improved to 17.6%. The outlook for fiscal year 2027 is particularly optimistic, with projected revenues between USD 65 billion and USD 72 billion, significantly higher than the Wall Street consensus of approximately USD 52.5 billion.

Geopolitical Tensions

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains precarious, despite former President Donald Trump's assertion that the U.S. has "full control" over the strait. Shipping traffic data does not support this claim, and recent incidents involving commercial vessels in the Bab al-Mandab and Gulf of Oman indicate that risks to maritime shipping are still high. Gulf states are reportedly seeking alternative shipping routes, suggesting a long-term concern regarding the stability of the region.

Oil Market Insights

Oil prices continue to remain elevated, even in light of Trump's assurances regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing hopes for a U.S.-Iran agreement to reopen the strait are being challenged by new attacks on vessels in the region. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has adjusted its oil price forecasts for 2026 and 2027, citing production disruptions and transportation challenges as key factors.

Global Market Performance

Asian equity markets displayed mixed results today. The KOSPI index rose over 3%, buoyed by strong performances from technology stocks and chipmakers like Samsung and SK Hynix. Conversely, the Nikkei index saw a modest gain of around 0.9%, while markets in China and India traded in negative territory.

Regulatory Changes in Australia

Australia is set to implement a minimum wage of AUD 31.30 per hour starting August 17 for approximately 250,000 couriers working for delivery platforms. This new regulation will also include accident insurance, which is expected to increase operational costs for food delivery companies.

Interest Rates and Currency Markets

Japanese government bond yields are rising sharply due to inflation concerns driven by higher oil prices, which may lead the Bank of Japan to continue increasing interest rates. Despite the rise in yields, the Japanese yen remains weak against the U.S. dollar.

Precious Metals and Cryptocurrencies

Sentiment in the precious metals market is positive, with gold prices rising around 0.6% and testing the USD 4,400 per ounce mark. Silver has also seen gains, moving above USD 65 per ounce. In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin has increased by approximately 0.3%, nearing USD 64,000, while Ethereum is also on the rise, approaching the USD 1,900 level.
