Gold Market Analysis - September 15, 2026

Current Market Overview

As of September 15, 2026, gold prices have decreased by approximately 0.75%, trading around $4,266 per ounce. This decline comes ahead of a significant decision by the Federal Reserve, with short-term investors expressing concerns about potential position reductions in gold due to rising yields.

Impact of Federal Reserve Decision

The upcoming Federal Reserve meeting is pivotal, not only for the decision on interest rates but also for the projections and the tone of the press conference. Analysts speculate that while a rate hike may be on the table, the Fed's messaging could indicate a more cautious approach, possibly framing any hike as a temporary adjustment rather than a long-term strategy.

The market currently anticipates at least three rate hikes by June 2027, which adds pressure on gold prices.

Influence of Rising Oil Prices

Compounding the situation is the rise in oil prices, which tends to elevate inflation expectations. While higher commodity prices typically support gold as a hedge, they also increase the likelihood of Fed rate hikes, which negatively impacts gold in the short term. The market is currently interpreting the rise in oil prices as a bearish signal for gold.

Central Bank Gold Purchases

On a positive note, central banks, particularly China, have significantly increased their gold purchases, acquiring 20 tons for the second consecutive month. This trend represents about 10% of the quarterly demand from all central banks, indicating a potential shift in reserve diversification strategies.

Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, gold has recently breached two critical structures: an ascending trendline and a horizontal support zone between $4,310 and $4,330. This breach signals a weakening bullish momentum since the August rally. Currently, gold is testing the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level at $4,266 and the SMA50 at $4,274. A close below these levels could lead to further declines towards $4,158 or even the psychological barrier of $4,000.

For bullish sentiment to regain traction, gold must reclaim levels above $4,330, with a target of $4,437 and ultimately $4,500 to invalidate the current bearish signals.

Correlation with EUR/USD

The analysis also highlights a strong correlation between gold prices and the EUR/USD currency pair. A weakening dollar could serve as a significant signal for gold prices moving forward.
