Summary of European Gas and Oil Market Trends

Current Market Overview

As of October 12, 2026, European gas prices have surged to their highest levels in three years, with contracts exceeding EUR 84, marking a significant increase of over 5%. This rise in energy commodity prices is accompanied by a notable increase in oil prices, with WTI nearing USD 94 per barrel and Brent surpassing USD 106.

Key Factors Influencing Prices

The primary driver behind the bullish trend in European gas prices is the disruption of LNG supplies from the Middle East, compounded by the onset of the heating season. Reports indicate that European gas storage levels may conclude the injection season at only 75-78% capacity, which is approximately 10 percentage points below the five-year average. Additionally, forecasts suggest a potential cooling trend in northwestern Europe later in October, further heightening demand for gas.

US Gas Market Dynamics

In contrast to the European market, US gas prices, particularly Henry Hub contracts, are experiencing a decline. The recent gains attributed to Hurricane Isaias are diminishing as demand stabilizes and production in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to resume. This divergence highlights the contrasting supply and demand dynamics between the two regions.

Market Sensitivity and Future Outlook

The outlook for European gas remains precarious, particularly sensitive to temperature fluctuations. With limited inventories and ongoing logistical challenges in LNG supply, even minor disruptions could lead to significant price volatility. The market is currently pricing in not only the risks associated with the upcoming winter but also the costs related to rebuilding inventories by 2027.

Technical Analysis

Despite the prevailing supply tensions, European gas prices are struggling to maintain levels above EUR 85. A potential pullback could indicate weakening buying momentum, with a correction target around EUR 70. However, the current trend remains upward, with a psychological target of EUR 100 in sight. Traders are advised to monitor the Relative Strength Index (RSI) to identify potential overbought conditions as prices continue to rise.
