Gold Slides Near $4,050 as Oil Surge Revives Rate Fears

By Martin Lam

Market Overview

Gold prices experienced a significant decline of over 2% on Thursday, settling near $4,050 an ounce in early Asian trading on Friday, July 24. The drop was primarily driven by surging oil prices, which heightened inflation concerns. The increase in US Treasury yields and a stronger dollar diminished the appeal of gold as a safe-haven asset amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Current Gold Prices

As of Thursday, spot gold (XAU/USD) fell by 2.1% to $4,043.14 an ounce, retreating from a two-week high reached the previous day. US gold futures for August delivery also saw a decline, settling approximately 2.5% lower at $4,050.20. The early Asian session on Friday indicated further selling pressure on gold prices.

Impact of Rising Oil Prices

Brent crude oil prices surged over 6%, crossing the $100 per barrel mark for the first time since May, following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Saudi oil tankers. This development raised concerns about potential disruptions in oil supply, particularly in critical shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz.

Higher oil prices are expected to increase costs across the global economy, which has overshadowed recent softer inflation reports from the US. Analysts suggest that central banks may need to maintain elevated borrowing costs in response to rising inflation expectations.

Geopolitical Tensions

The conflict in the Middle East has expanded, with the Houthis claiming responsibility for attacks on Saudi tankers and threatening further actions. US President Donald Trump has warned of potential military responses if such attacks continue, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.

While geopolitical instability typically drives investors towards gold, the concurrent rise in energy prices is also pushing inflation expectations higher, which in turn raises bond yields and strengthens the dollar, creating a mixed environment for gold investments.

Federal Reserve Outlook

Market expectations regarding the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions have shifted, with futures indicating a 36% probability of a rate hike at the upcoming meeting on July 28-29. The likelihood of a quarter-point increase by September has risen sharply to around 82-83%.

Investors are keenly awaiting comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh regarding the implications of the oil shock on inflation. Analysts predict a potentially hawkish tone, which could lead to significant market reactions.

Precious Metals Market Trends

The decline in gold prices has also affected other precious metals. Spot silver dropped 3.8% to $57.44 an ounce, platinum fell 3.3% to $1,590.58, and palladium decreased by 2.7% to $1,256.50. This broad decline indicates that tighter financial conditions are overshadowing safe-haven demand, alongside profit-taking after earlier gains.

Future Considerations

Traders will be closely monitoring oil prices, potential disruptions in tanker traffic, and any escalation in military actions by the US against Iran. The Federal Reserve's upcoming decision will serve as a critical test for market sentiment. A hawkish stance, rising Treasury yields, or a stronger dollar could push gold prices back towards $4,000, while de-escalation or weaker economic data might stabilize gold around $4,050.
