Strategic Recalibration of Gulf Ties
In a significant address, the Iranian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Reza Enayati, has called for a "thorough re-evaluation" of relations between Iran and Gulf nations. This call comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the region, particularly due to the ongoing conflict involving external powers. The Ambassador emphasized the need for introspection into bilateral and regional relationships to foster genuine prosperity in the Middle East, advocating for a reduction of external influences that contribute to instability.
Regional Security Challenges
When asked about the impact of the current conflict on regional relations, Ambassador Enayati acknowledged it as a "realistic issue." He argued that the solution lies in recognizing the interconnectedness of neighboring states. He noted that the past five decades in the Middle East have been marred by conflicts largely due to "exclusive internal practices" and an "over-reliance on external powers." He urged the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, along with Iraq and Iran, to strengthen their ties.
Since the escalation of conflict in February 2024, Gulf nations have faced over 2,000 missile and drone attacks, targeting U.S. military and diplomatic installations as well as critical infrastructure across the region. The UAE, which normalized relations with Israel in 2020, has been particularly affected, while other Gulf states have vocally condemned Iran.
Dissatisfaction with U.S. Security Role
There is a growing sense of dissatisfaction among Gulf nations regarding the United States' role as their primary security guarantor. This discontent arises from the perception that these countries are entangled in a conflict misaligned with their interests, incurring disproportionate costs. In Saudi Arabia, attacks have been concentrated in the Eastern Province, a vital oil-producing area, and near U.S. military installations.
Resumption of Saudi-Iranian Ties
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which had been strained for years, saw a restoration of diplomatic ties in 2023. Ambassador Enayati denied Iran's involvement in attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, asserting that Iran targets "American and Israeli objectives and interests." He emphasized that if Iran were responsible for such attacks, it would openly admit to them.
Ongoing Communication and Future Aspirations
Ambassador Enayati highlighted ongoing communication with Saudi officials, noting that bilateral relations are "progressing naturally." He praised Saudi Arabia for its cooperative spirit, particularly in facilitating the departure of Iranian pilgrims and providing medical assistance. He conveyed a message to Gulf states that the current conflict is "imposed upon us and the entire Middle East region," advocating for a cessation of U.S. and Israeli attacks and a focus on building a prosperous Middle East.
