Global Markets Weekly Update - June 12, 2026

U.S. Market Overview

Major U.S. stock indexes ended the week higher, driven by cautious optimism regarding a potential U.S.-Iran agreement, declining oil prices, and a broadening market beyond large-cap technology shares. The Russell 2000 Index led the advance with a 3.9% increase, while the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all rose over 0.65%.

Mixed inflation data and volatility in AI-related stocks were offset by positive sentiment from geopolitical developments. The week also saw the record IPO of SpaceX.

Inflation and Economic Data

Consumer prices rose 4.2% year-over-year in May, the highest since April 2023, primarily due to surging energy prices. However, month-over-month growth showed signs of deceleration. Jobless claims rose to 229,000, indicating a slight increase in unemployment.

Consumer sentiment improved modestly, with the University of Michigan's index rising to 48.9, although inflation concerns persisted.

European Market Insights

The pan-European STOXX 600 Index rose 1.69% amid mixed market reactions to the ECB's interest rate hike, the first since September 2023. The ECB raised rates due to inflation concerns, projecting headline inflation to average 3.0% in 2026.

Germany's industrial output rose 0.4% in April, while inflation in the Netherlands hit 3.5% in May, reflecting rising air travel prices.

Japan's Economic Landscape

Japan's stock markets faced volatility, with the Nikkei 225 index down 0.85%. Anticipation of a rate hike by the Bank of Japan was high, as inflationary pressures mount. Producer prices rose significantly, while GDP growth was revised down but still exceeded expectations.

China's Trade and Inflation Data

China's exports surged 19.4% year-over-year in May, driven by strong demand for semiconductors and AI-related products. However, consumer demand remained subdued, with CPI growth stagnant at 1.2%.

The Pentagon expanded scrutiny of Chinese tech firms, adding several major companies to its list, reflecting ongoing U.S.-China tensions.

Other Key Markets

Indonesia

Indonesia's market faced volatility, prompting an unexpected rate hike by the central bank to stabilize the currency amid policy uncertainty.

Argentina

Argentina saw disinflation gains, with CPI slowing to 2.1% month-over-month, supporting a more favorable credit backdrop and tighter spreads in sovereign credit.
