S&P 500 Breakout Puts 8,000 in Sight

By David Scutt | Wed, 07 Oct 2026

Overview

The S&P 500 has recently achieved new record highs, driven by strong technical indicators and favorable seasonal patterns as earnings season approaches. Despite concerns regarding narrowing market breadth, historical data suggests that this may not indicate an imminent reversal of the current bullish trend.

Technical Analysis

The S&P 500's technical indicators remain bullish, with a series of higher lows established since June. A significant rebound occurred after a dip below the 50-day moving average, leading to a breakout above the previous record high of 7,816.5 set in August. Key indicators such as the RSI and MACD are showing positive momentum, reinforcing the bullish outlook.

If the index maintains its position above 7,816.5, it could encourage further bullish activity towards the psychological level of 8,000. Conversely, a drop below this level could prompt short positions targeting lower support levels.

Quarter Turn Analysis

Historically, the S&P 500 has performed well following quarter-end periods, particularly leading into earnings season. Data shows that the index has consistently delivered stronger returns post-quarter end compared to regular month-end periods. This trend suggests that the current breakout may have further upside potential.

Since 2006, the S&P 500 has averaged returns of 0.31% after five sessions post-quarter end, with higher percentages of positive returns compared to ordinary month ends. This pattern is likely influenced by the tendency for earnings reports to exceed expectations.

Breadth Concerns

Despite the bullish technicals and favorable seasonal patterns, there are concerns regarding the narrow breadth of the rally, which has been largely driven by a few AI-related companies. The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index has not reached the same highs as the cap-weighted index, indicating a lack of broad participation in the rally.

As of early October, only 29.5% of S&P 500 constituents were above their 50-day moving average, highlighting the narrowness of the rally. However, historical data suggests that while narrow breadth may slow the pace of gains, it does not necessarily predict an imminent downturn.

Conclusion

In summary, while the S&P 500 is experiencing a bullish breakout with strong technical indicators and favorable seasonal trends, the narrow breadth of the rally remains a point of caution. Investors should monitor these dynamics closely as earnings season unfolds, as historical patterns suggest potential for continued upside despite current concerns.
