Alibaba Stock Falls Then Rebounds 1.3% as Profit Plunges 75% and AI Spending Jumps 75%

Published on August 20, 2026

Overview

Alibaba's shares experienced a volatile trading session, initially opening 5% lower due to a significant drop in quarterly profits. However, the stock rebounded to close 1.3% higher, indicating investor confidence in the company's growth in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services despite short-term profitability concerns.

Key Financial Metrics

  • Revenue: RMB 268.95 billion (approximately $39.64 billion), up 9% year-over-year.
  • Net Income: RMB 10.44 billion (approximately $1.54 billion), down 75%.
  • Non-GAAP Net Income: RMB 20.72 billion, down 38%.
  • Capital Expenditure: RMB 67.68 billion (approximately $10 billion), up 75%.
  • AI Cloud Revenue: RMB 48.44 billion, up 45%.
  • Free Cash Flow: Outflow of RMB 44.67 billion.

Revenue Growth vs. Profit Decline

Alibaba's revenue growth was primarily driven by its AI infrastructure and cloud computing services. However, the company's net income saw a drastic decline due to increased capital expenditures and lower investment gains. The operating margin fell from 14% to 6%, reflecting the pressure on profitability.

AI Cloud Performance

The AI Cloud and Compute Services division reported a remarkable 45% increase in revenue, reaching RMB 48.44 billion. This segment is showing strong profitability, with adjusted EBITA more than doubling to RMB 5.63 billion and an EBITA margin of 12%. The demand for AI-related products and cloud services is expanding, with over 650 external customers utilizing Alibaba's proprietary Zhenwu processors.

Challenges in AI Applications

In contrast, the AI Labs and Applications division faced challenges, with revenue growth of only 16% to RMB 3.34 billion, while adjusted EBITA losses widened significantly. The increased spending on AI development and operational costs associated with new applications like Qwen3.8-Max contributed to these losses.

Capital Expenditure Insights

Alibaba's capital expenditure surged to nearly $10 billion, driven by the need for enhanced computing capacity and rising semiconductor costs. This spending resulted in a significant free cash flow outflow, although the company maintains a strong cash position of approximately $69.93 billion.

E-Commerce Performance

The e-commerce division's revenue grew by 4%, but the performance was uneven, with a notable decline in China e-commerce revenue. Quick-commerce services, however, showed strong growth, offsetting some of the declines in traditional e-commerce segments.

Market Reaction

Initially, the market reacted negatively to the profit decline and increased expenditures. However, the strong growth in cloud revenue and profitability improvements in that segment led to a recovery in Alibaba's stock price, suggesting a shift in investor perception towards viewing Alibaba as a leading AI infrastructure company.
