Summary of Novartis Shares Decline

Overview

On September 8, 2026, Novartis AG (NOVN.CH) experienced a significant drop in its share price, falling approximately 10%. This decline marks the steepest decrease in the STOXX Europe 600 index and is attributed to disappointing results from a key clinical trial.

Clinical Trial Setbacks

The primary cause of the share price decline was the failure of the Phase III HARBOR trial for the experimental drug del-desiran, intended for treating myotonic dystrophy type 1. The trial did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in hand-opening time, which was the primary endpoint measuring myotonia severity. The study involved around 150 patients over a treatment period of 54 weeks.

Despite the setback, Novartis noted that del-desiran showed some clinical activity in secondary endpoints and exploratory analyses. The company plans to review the full dataset before determining the future of the drug's development.

Additional Concerns

The market's negative reaction was compounded by another recent failure: the Phase III Lp(a)HORIZON trial for pelacarsen, which also did not meet its primary objective of significantly reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events. This marks the second major clinical disappointment for Novartis within a short timeframe, raising concerns about the company's ability to develop new growth sources.

Financial Outlook

Despite the recent setbacks, Novartis has maintained its medium-term financial targets, projecting an average annual sales growth of 5% to 6% from 2025 to 2030. Following the decline, Novartis shares were trading around CHF 114, reducing their year-to-date gain to less than 5%. If this decline persists, it could rank among the company's worst single-day performances in decades, with the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio cooling to approximately 20 times earnings.

Conclusion

The recent clinical trial failures have raised significant concerns among investors regarding Novartis's growth prospects, leading to a sharp decline in share price. The company's ability to navigate these challenges and maintain its financial targets will be closely monitored in the coming months.
