Market Summary - October 22, 2026

Market Overview

The Nasdaq-100 index (US100) experienced a significant decline of 1.8% on October 22, 2026, closing at 29,467 points, which is a drop of 554 points or 1.85%. This downturn was largely attributed to investor concerns regarding the costs associated with investments in artificial intelligence (AI).

Company Performances

Despite Meta Platforms Inc. reporting a revenue increase of 26% to $64.6 billion, the market sentiment remained negative. Meta's announcement to issue Class C shares raised alarms about its capital commitments. Additionally, Lam Research's disappointing outlook led to an over 8% drop in its stock price after market close. Tesla also faced a decline of approximately 5% in premarket trading, while the semiconductor sector saw widespread losses, with Intel and Marvell both down more than 5% and Nvidia down 2.2%.

Macroeconomic Factors

The broader economic environment contributed to market pressures, with Brent crude oil prices rising over 2% to around $108 due to ongoing Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Concurrently, U.S. 10-year Treasury yields fell to about 5.09%, while French 10-year OAT yields increased to 5.05%, widening the spread against German bonds.

Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, the US100 index fell below the 100-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA100) at 29,526, indicating a potential weakening of the short-term trend. The critical support zone is identified between 29,000 and 29,300 points. If this level holds, it may signify a mere correction within an ongoing uptrend; however, a breach could lead to further declines towards the 200-day EMA at 28,314 points, which is seen as a structural defense line for the rally that began in April.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently at 39, approaching the oversold territory but not yet at extreme levels, suggesting that the downtrend could persist before a potential technical rebound occurs.

Market Breadth and Valuation

Market breadth indicates caution, with only 56% of Nasdaq-100 companies trading above their 50-day moving average. The gap between the index and the 200-day EMA has narrowed to +6.2%, reflecting a significant shift from previously overheated levels. The forward Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio for the Nasdaq-100 has decreased to 21.9x, below the 126-day average of 23.7x, which may temper concerns about market overvaluation. However, in the current climate, the valuation of future earnings growth is likely to play a crucial role in determining market direction.
