Market Summary - August 18, 2026

Oil and Commodities

Brent crude oil prices have surged past $91 per barrel, driven by geopolitical tensions following an attack on a merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The expiration of a US-Iran memorandum has also contributed to the volatility in oil prices. Meanwhile, the US diesel crack spread has reached a record $102.20 per barrel due to high demand in agriculture and shipping.

Gold prices have retreated to around $4,392 per ounce, facing resistance at the $4,500 mark, despite strong demand from central banks. Agricultural commodities have shown strong gains, with cocoa rising by 5.09% and orange juice gaining 3.18%.

Stock Markets and Equities

Nvidia has announced a significant investment of up to $105 billion to develop an 8 GW data center campus in Ohio for OpenAI. In the tech sector, Microsoft and Salesforce are considering acquiring the Darwinbox platform ahead of its IPO. However, Asian indices have seen declines, with Japan's Nikkei 225 dropping over 1.6% and South Korea's KOSPI falling by 1.1%. Wall Street also faced selling pressure, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 both declining.

Macroeconomics

The global bond market is experiencing a sell-off, with US 30-year bond yields reaching their highest levels since 2007. Analysts note a significant reduction in US Treasury bonds held globally, which could lead to higher yields and impact gold prices. The Federal Reserve is unlikely to raise rates soon due to soft inflation data, but there are concerns about commodity cost pressures.

In China, authorities are planning to stimulate consumption at the county level, while the People's Bank of China is considering a rate cut to support the economy.

Currencies

The Reserve Bank of India has intervened in the currency market to support the rupee amid capital outflows and rising oil prices. The USD/JPY rate is hovering around 159.7, while the New Zealand dollar has fallen below 0.5900 due to disappointing economic data from China.

Institutional analyses suggest potential medium-term weakness for the US dollar against the euro and British pound.

Cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin is consolidating above the $64,000 level, with expectations of increased volatility in the coming months. However, the altcoin market is experiencing a sell-off, particularly with Gala and Filecoin.

Geopolitical Developments

Recent events in the Strait of Hormuz, including an explosion on a merchant ship, have heightened the risk of conflict escalation in the region. Additionally, a significant drone attack in Moscow has raised concerns about security and stability in the area.
