Brazil Elections: Investor Confidence Beginning to Fade

Overview

The recent Brazilian presidential election has significantly impacted investor sentiment, particularly following Lula da Silva's victory in the second round. This outcome has led to a noticeable decline in investor confidence, as evidenced by the performance of key financial benchmarks such as the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF and the VanEck Brazil Small-Cap ETF, both of which have seen declines exceeding 15% at the start of the week.

An Election Surprise

The election process gained attention after the first round of voting on October 4, where Flavio Bolsonaro, representing the political right, garnered nearly 47% of the votes compared to Lula's 45%. This unexpected result shifted market expectations and increased confidence in a potential Bolsonaro victory. Consequently, Brazilian equities experienced a recovery as investors began to lower the fiscal risk premium associated with local assets.

However, Lula's eventual victory with 51.8% of the vote in the runoff caught many investors off guard, leading to a surge in uncertainty and a higher risk premium for Brazilian assets. This shift has reignited concerns regarding public spending, fiscal deficits, and debt growth, which have historically made investors cautious.

Market Reactions

The immediate aftermath of the election saw a sharp increase in Brazilian 10-year government bond yields, which rose from around 13% to nearly 15.45%. This spike indicates that investors are demanding higher returns to compensate for perceived sovereign risk. The decline in investor confidence also affected equities, with major companies like Petrobras and Santander Brasil experiencing significant drops of approximately 14% and 13%, respectively.

The selling pressure observed in the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF and the VanEck Brazil Small-Cap ETF reflects a broader reduction in confidence regarding the stability of the Brazilian stock market. As bond yields rise, fixed-income investments may become more attractive, potentially leading to further capital outflows from equities.

Technical Forecast for the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF

The previously bullish trend for the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF is losing relevance. Following the election results, the ETF has dropped sharply towards the $34 area, putting pressure on the trendline that had supported price action in recent months. Although selling pressure has not yet confirmed a structured bearish trend, it has introduced uncertainty that could lead to a consolidation phase if confidence does not recover.

Key Technical Indicators:

  • RSI: The RSI has fallen below the neutral level of 50, indicating dominant selling momentum. It is approaching the oversold zone, which may signal potential short-term bullish corrections.
  • MACD: The MACD histogram remains below the neutral line, suggesting a consistent bearish structure in short-term moving averages.

Key Levels to Watch:

  • 38.64: Key resistance level aligning with recent highs and the 50-period simple moving average.
  • 35.35: Near-term barrier representing an important retracement zone.
  • 30.84: Key support level not seen since December 2025; a sustained move below this could indicate a significant structural change.
