Alphabet Set For Dow Entry As Verizon Exits Blue Chip Index

By Martin Lam

Overview

Alphabet (GOOGL) is set to replace Verizon Communications (VZ) in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, effective before trading opens on June 29, as announced by S&P Dow Jones Indices. This change has led to a modest increase in Alphabet's stock price during after-hours trading, while Verizon's stock experienced a slight decline.

Market Reaction

Following the announcement, Alphabet's shares rose approximately 0.5% in after-hours trading, recovering from a 1% decline during regular trading hours. In contrast, Verizon's stock fell by less than 1% after previously gaining about 3% in the regular session. The broader market was under pressure, with the Nasdaq Composite dropping 2.2% and the S&P 500 losing 1.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a minor decline of 0.1%.

Index Weighting Changes

S&P Dow Jones Indices indicated that Verizon's low share price resulted in it holding only about 0.5% of the Dow's weight. The Dow is a price-weighted index, meaning that higher-priced stocks have a greater impact on the index's movements. Alphabet's inclusion in the Dow enhances the index's exposure to sectors that dominate the current U.S. equity market, particularly technology and digital services.

Context of the Change

With Alphabet's entry, it becomes the fifth member of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" stocks in the Dow, joining other tech giants like Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), and Nvidia (NVDA). This reshuffle highlights a significant shift in the Dow's composition, moving away from traditional industrial and telecommunications companies towards those focused on software, data centers, AI infrastructure, and digital advertising.

Additional Changes

In a related adjustment, Honeywell International will remain in the Dow after spinning off Honeywell Aerospace, which will join the S&P 500, replacing Conagra Brands (CAG).

Outlook

As the June 29 effective date approaches, traders will monitor index-tracking flows and Alphabet's weighting in the Dow. Additionally, investors will keep an eye on Alphabet's spending in AI, cloud margins, regulatory risks, and Verizon's performance outside the blue-chip index.
