Market Analysis - October 30, 2026
By Kathleen Brooks, Research Director UK
Overview
The market is experiencing a continuation of the recent tech sell-off, primarily driven by disappointing earnings reports and concerns surrounding the safety of cryptocurrencies following a significant hack at Binance, which resulted in losses estimated at $6.3 billion. This has negatively impacted investor sentiment towards technology and digital assets, leading to a predicted lower opening for the Nasdaq and a slight decline in Bitcoin.
Bond Market Dynamics
Despite the UK government's indecision regarding welfare spending cuts and potential tax increases, the bond market remains relatively unfazed. This indicates that market pressures are focused elsewhere, allowing bond vigilantes to remain inactive for the time being. Interestingly, yields are falling even as oil prices rise, suggesting a complex interplay between these markets.
Sector Performance
The FTSE 100 is outperforming other global indices as investors shift their focus away from the struggling tech sector. Strong earnings reports from companies like AstraZeneca and BP have bolstered market sentiment. AstraZeneca reported better-than-expected profits, largely due to its oncology drug sales, while BP's earnings also exceeded expectations, driven by refining margins and a reduction in net debt.
US Tech Sector Struggles
In contrast to the UK, the US tech sector is facing significant challenges. Alphabet's shares plummeted by 12% following disappointing earnings, and Amazon is also expected to see a decline after reporting weaker-than-expected earnings per share despite strong revenue growth in its cloud division. Intel's stock suffered a staggering 26% drop due to a slowdown in PC chip sales and rising costs associated with memory chips.
Market Outlook
As we approach the end of October, the outlook for the AI sector appears bleak, with investors shifting their focus towards non-tech sectors and safe-haven assets. The overall earnings season remains strong, with the S&P 500 reporting its second-best quarter for profit margins in 15 years, driven by sectors outside of technology.
